TYPE AS SPACE Poster for imagined exhibit at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. I saw the show as covering graphic design from the late 1800s to now and tried to create a piece spanning the period. It evokes Victorian ads and modern movements like Constructivism, as well as late 20th century takes on such movements--all while sporting a contemporary feel. I also played with a tension between 2- and 3D space, using the simple devices of linear perspective and a color scheme that advances, recedes, and suggests land and sky. Though the piece is decidedly flat, and eye and mind skate along the surface, it's also hard not to find your eye darting back into the picture plane, in spite of the lack of layers, gradients, and other such present-day tricks of the trade.
