MASTER OF NONCOMMUNICATION This poster presents an overview of the career of (in)famous graphic designer David Carson, from Transworld Skateboarding magazine through to his varied work at the turn of the millennium. My journalism skills came in handy for conducting the research and distilling the mass of info and imagery down into an effective narrative (I was responsible for all the content). The design itself captures aspects of Carson's style and approach while remaining original. The overall concept involves how a willing viewer can, with some practice, fairly easily decode Carson's cryptic visual subversions and solve his graphic puzzles. The copy presents a main storyline (a narrative of the designer's work experience) accompanied by several "sidebars" that discuss aspects of the designer's development and the historical context in which he has worked. A larger "sidebar" discusses his methods.

Early directions I’m still intrigued by these initial takes. The first features scraps from a printing plant, an illustration from Josef Müller-Brockmann’s Grid Systems in Graphic Design, and a diagram of the neural pathways involved in rational thinking on the one hand and an intuitive approach on the other. The second features letter forms created by chopping up one of Carson’s own photographs (letters that are probably still a bit too far on that side of legibility). Grist for a future project perhaps.
